CIOB Research Suggests Health and Safety Immune to Recession

The Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) conducted a survey of over 1,260 senior level construction professionals and came out with the conclusion that more than 80% of them do not agree to the fact that recession has had any impact on the overall health and safety scenario in their workplace.

A significant proportion of the respondents i.e. around 36%, asserted that the last one year in fact witnessed an increase in workplace expenditure on health, training and safety for the benefit of the employees. This came as a stark contrast to a mere 12.6% of respondents who believed otherwise.

Though more than two thirds of the respondents said that health and safety are the prime concerns for their companies, one fourth thought that despite being important, health and safety are not in the priority list of their companies.

Many respondents said that better training and spread of awareness could improve the standards of health and safety in the workplace. They also said that such training and awareness should not just be limited to the early stages of employment but should be present at all levels.

Some of the respondents said that HSE is not fully equipped, and that it should be more involved in inspecting, advising and supporting the industry. Around 24% also said that health and safety can never be regulated in the industry, while more than 40% said that it is not over regulated at this point.
