Faster Internet to Help the Public in Libraries and Museums

The Museum, Libraries and Archives Council (MLA) has confirmed that as a result of a new deal, local authorities across the nation will be able to switch over to the ‘Janet’ network from their standard broadband connection. This network is reputed to be very fast and is already available in most schools and universities.

Janet will improve the public internet access systems in libraries across the UK. Since this is a government-funded computer network, it will be able to offer users connection speeds of 1GB. This will be nearly ten times faster than the currently available bandwidth at even the bigger central libraries in the UK (click for fastest broadband info).

The chief executive of MLA Roy Clare considers this recent move as one of the biggest digital advances for public libraries since the time internet services were launched through the “People’s Network”. Clare has also urged all libraries and museums using the existing internet services to upgrade their service, although it is not mandatory for them to do so.

Publisher of the Culture 24 website Jane Finnis has also welcomed the new move. She considers this as a natural extension of the library services. She believes that the new network will automatically improve the experience of the users and will generate interest in other social activities and research.
